Sonnetar 50mm F/1.1 Silver

MS-Optical released Sonnetar 50mm F/1.1 around Oct 2012. It adopts Sonnar design, with 5 elements in 4 groups. The lens is in M mount, which can be used in Leica M film body (M1, M2, M3, M4, M4-2, M4-P, M5, M6, M7, MP, CL) and digital body (M8, M8.2, M9, M9P, ME, M), or compatible (like EPSON RD1, Voigtlander Bessa, Konica Hexar, Minolta CLE, Zeiss Ikon RF, etc). With adapter, it can be used on mirrorless digital cameras.

The lens is designed, hand-assembly, QC by Miyazaki san in his workshop. Build quality is solid. It may show little variations between individual pieces, or between different batches.

This run is expected with production volume of about 300 pieces, where 200 in black and 100 in silver. Silver is a limited edition, which is highlighted in the label on the box packing, and assummed that will not be produced any more in future.

A coma adjustment ring is provided in the rear part of the lens, for which you can fine tune this control to reduce spherical abberration, in order to improve image quality.

Form Factor

This Sonnetar 50mm F/1.1 lens is 'tiny' in terms of 50mm F/1.1 range. Without attaching the original hood, it is comparable in size as the Canon 50mm F1.4 LTM. How to achieve this size, my guess is :

  • It adopts Sonnar design, which can deliver compact size, light weight and fast aperture. Sonnar was common in old days, and in rangefinder world. We can see it in old Canon & Nikon LTM lenses, Contax RF lenese and extensively copied in Soviet lenses. For modern production, look at Carl Zeiss C Sonnar 50mm F/1.5 ZM.
  • Sonnar at the same time suffers more aberrations than other design, say Planar. Some may interpret good quality image as sharp at four corners at aperture wide open. So in this lens, it gives a trade off on image quality on corners, in return of more compact size. For arguement sake, using same Sonnar design, it can create a medium or large format lens, but only utlizing the centre part of image circle coverage for 135 / full frame in order to achieve best image quality at corners, but the size of the lens will not be like this Sonnetar 50mm F/1.1.

Filter Thread Size

Filters of 3 different sizes can be used on this lens mounted with original hood :

  • 52mm
  • 55mm
  • 62mm
For 55mm filter, note that it is mounted in reverse direction on the outside of lens front, then hood is screwed on the back of the filter.
