King Check Polaphy
The Classic Action Sampler

Back To History

It is nothing new when Lomography promoting Action Sampler alike cameras (Action Sampler / Super Sampler / Oktomat). For decades ago, there were cameras implementing the same idea. One of them was the King Check Polaphy, manufactured by Asanuma & Co. Ltd of Tokyo, Japan in the 70s. This camera was marketed under the name 'King Sequence 8' in United States and Europe.

The original purpose is supposed to be capturing a series of consecutive shots in sport activities or industrial application for detail study, such as golf swing, machinery movement. In using Polaroid film, 8 images can be obtained within the single Polaroid print on the spot. It can facilitate such direct feedback before video tape recorder and digital cameras are invented.

It is not like Lomography plastic toy. King Check Polaphy has a heavy metal body.

Testing Shot

Due to limitation on shutter speed and aperture setting (refer to later section), it is suggested to take photos for outdoor, or indoor by using flash. The test shot was captured in my home in the morning, with strong sunlight coming from window, where the exposure was somehow similar to outdoor lighting condition.

About The Camera

The camera shown in this webpage is borrowed from a Polaroid Camera collector (Special thanks to tm)

  • Built with Polaroid back, to accept Polaroid 100 series instant film
  • Camera front panel, built with the 8 x lens modules
  • Shutter cocking crank, need to be triggerred before taking every shot. Red LED light will show up to indicate that camera shutter is in ready mode for shooting
  • Fixed shutter speed at 1/300 sec
  • Aperture setting supports F/6.3, 8, 11, 16, 22, 32, 45 and Close (as shutter speed is fixed at 1/300 sec, adjusting aperture setting is the only way to control exposure)
  • Shutter release button in square shape, not support attachment of shutter release cable
  • Dual control to set the time delay between consecutive shots (Don't mix up this with shutter speed). Switch to set HIGH and LOW speed group, and rotating knot to adjust speed for 1-10 within each group. Therefore, it can provide 20 speed settings (2 x 10). The total time delay for 8 frames can be varied from slowest 7 sec to the fastest 0.07 sec.
  • An eye level folding Newtonian viewfinder is located on the camera top
  • The handgrip is embedded with the battery compartment, which takes 4 C size cells. (for its electronic operated shutters)
  • Tripod hole at camera botton, for attaching to tripod to ensure making steady shots
